Anna Currell 2 - Harder, Faster, Stronger

100 m Men's Backstroke

Regression Equation:

y= ax+b

y= -0.28x+80.05

100 m Women's Backstroke

Regression Equation:

y= ax+b

y= -0.3x+88.96

Questions:

1) The "a" in this equation represents the slope of the best fit line. The "b" will represent where the line crosses the y-axis, or the y-intercept. In this case, the swimmer's time would drecrease by roughly "a" each year that Olympic event was competed. The "b" would represent where the graph would be located on the x and y axes. If the "b", or the person whose time was greatest, were lower then the graph would cross the y-intercept in a lower location.

2) The men's and women's times are fairly similar, however the men have seemed to maintain a lower time by a few seconds. An amazing time for the 100 meter backstroke for men would be under 47 seconds, which could be expected to happen, if this rate continues, in 2016. An amazing time for the 100 meter backstroke for women would be under 53 seconds. This could be expected to occur, if this rate continues, in 2016 as well.
